An onlay restoration works the same way as an inlay restoration. An inlay fills the space between the rounded edges of the tooth. A dental onlay covers one or more of the cusps (rounded edges) or the entire biting surface of the tooth.
Reasons for onlay restorations:
- Broken or fractured teeth.
- Cosmetic enhancement.
- Decayed teeth.
- Fractured fillings.
- Large fillings.
Dental onlays are sometimes referred to as partial crowns because of their extensive coverage. The onlay procedure is very similar to the inlay procedure.
